Field note 01 / Hosting

A folder becomes
a website.

A static host sends files to the browser. The browser turns those files into the page you see.

Three ingredients

HTML describes the content and its structure. CSS controls the layout and visual style. JavaScript adds behavior such as the diagram on the homepage and the quiz in the scaling note.

All three can be served as static files. This site uses relative links and local assets, so its folder can be uploaded to either hosting platform without a build step.

Two ways to host the same files

Follow the request

When a visitor opens this page, the host returns HTML. The browser then requests the shared stylesheet and JavaScript. A link to another page triggers another navigation. Keeping the directory structure intact lets those relative paths continue working.

Hosting and application logic are separate concerns. A static host serves the files; it does not run a PHP application or a database for this website.
